In Kansas City, ACORN Housing Corporation is helping people to realize the dreams that they have for actually owning their own home. Some people prefer to rent all the time, but a lot of people don't enjoy that because they have a desire to have something that belongs to them and that they can change the way they want and make all their own. If they don't own a home they can't always do that, and they really don't have privacy, since the landlord has the right to come in and inspect their apartment.
However, for people who aren't able to own their own home, getting at least an apartment is a step in the right direction - but paying for it can be difficult. Kansas City, though, understands that there are people who deserve to have a good place to live and simply can't do it because they don't make enough. They need to have their rent subsidized, at least to a certain extent, so that it's not more than around thirty percent of their income. If they work a minimum wage job, even full time, thirty percent of that is generally not that much. When they have a family to take care of or are a single parent of at least one child, money has to go out for a lot of things, and rent sometimes doesn't get paid, or gets paid late.
Not paying rent or other bills on time damages a person's credit, and with a low credit score it can be hard to qualify for a home loan even when you start making more money. It can also be difficult to finance even a used car, get a credit card that's unsecured, or do other things that require credit checks, like getting a cellular phone.
It's amazing how many things a person's credit affects, and it's usually not something that lower income people worry much about because they don't feel like they will ever be able to afford much anyway. Subsidizing their housing and teaching them about money through the ACORN project can help them to see that they really can have more than they were expecting.
