There are a number of great options for cheap apartments in the Atlanta Metro area. The Metro Fair Housing Group helps local residents of the Atlanta area in finding low income apartments in 6 different complexes throughout the city. These complexes accept Section 8 vouchers for tenants to use. Section 8 is a federally controlled program that allows the tenant to afford a unit they otherwise wouldn't be able to. There are also motel units for single adults with no children, this is the Santa Fe Villas location - designed specifically for homeless people.
You can find additional Section 8 information and properties in Atlanta on the Atlanta City website. There is also a HOME program which allows low income individuals to purchase a home and then rehabilitate it while living in it. You receive either grants or loans for the property and then you make payments based on what you can afford. Many of the payments don't have to occur until later on, so it allows the individual to get on their feet and then make the loan payments when they can afford to. You may also qualify for emergency house repair with the Community Housing Resource Center - check out more at the AtlantaGA.gov web stie.
There are many community events that help raise awareness for public housing in Atlanta. There is a division of Atlanta's government called HOME that serves as a consumer watchdog and investigates predatory lending practices and unscrupulous landlords that may be preying on tenants. HOME will also look at the mortgage companies and banks to see if they were taking advantage of a homeowner. Some of the cases raised by HOME may result in class action suits by an independent Atlanta attorney.
The goal of the Bureau of Housing in Atlanta is to create a relationship with private enterprise to engender more affordable housing in the local area. If you are looking for an apartment in Atlanta, you can rest assured that their are many public sector groups looking out for your best interests. If you think you've been wronged by a landlord or a mortgage company, make sure to take your grievances to a public organization so you can determine if you have any recourse for your specific situation.
